Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first television roles included two roles in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Because of their fear of stress, the parents did not want to see performing before she turned 18. Perry, who was too timid to perform in the high school, started to act in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. Perry left for New York, where she got small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then caused Perry her back home California and theater roles were in demand. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013 In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's crime thriller The Family. In 2017, she had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on her role on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The part was offered to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she has a family tie to the role.
